Tangent Projects Studio Residency Autumn 2022
For our Autumn/Winter 2022 residency programme we are excited to welcome Irene Brok & Sonja Šurbatović to Tangent Projects studios.
Many thanks to the selection team - Paloma Chavez Muente, Viola Menzendorff, Sejal Parekh and Jorge Sánchez - for all their hard work.
Sonja Šurbatović is a Yugoslavia - born artist.
She began her career in Belgrade, where she graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts. Her practice involves design, drawings, paintings, and installation. Currently, she is in doctoral studies at Complutense University Madrid, where her research focuses on language changes under the influence of violence and its after-effect on gender matters.
Sonja has received various design awards alongside her team, from European Design Awards, Art Directors Club NYC, Design Week London, Rebrand 100 London, etc. Her work has been part of solo and group exhibitions in Medellin, Bogota, Paris, Barcelona and Belgrade. She lives and works between Madrid, Belgrade, and Barcelona.
Irene Brok is a Dutch artist, born in Girona, Spain.
In her practice, she explores the space in and in-between painting and sculpture. Thematically this is a response to a fascination for displacement. She finds displacement in her social surroundings, but also in the socio-political discourse on gender, race, and power structures.
In her former practice as a social psychologist, Irene encountered methodologies to research the universalities in human behaviour, and the differences. In the artistic practice, she finds these methods can be pushed further to address these topics on another level than the explicatory.
To accompany Irene Brok and Sonja Šurbatović’s end-of-residency exhibition project, Tales of Touch, we collaborated with Trio Editorial to produce a zine publication - click here to see their zine.
