As part of María Monegro’s exhibition “Cómo me Convertí en Lava” (How I Became Lava), and in conjunction with Art Nou 2023, we invite you to an Old school reggaeton party, on the 30th of June at 7:00 pm.
“It is inevitable that what we see and hear, and our cultural background, influences our work as artists, regardless of the medium we choose. Being Dominican and Caribbean, reggaeton is part of my culture and has been one of the most constant music genres in my life. I remember that at the age of 12, I was already dancing to the rhythm of "Latigazo" by Daddy Yankee.
For more than half of my life, I have been listening to reggaeton, for better or for worse, as some argue that reggaeton and dembow (urban music) are to blame for the increased violence in the Dominican Republic. There is more violence because social inequalities are becoming more acute, because we lack access to proper education and even sexual and reproductive health. For many artists in the genre, reggaeton has been the ticket to escape poverty and the 'barrio'. For me, reggaeton and dembow, apart from saving lives, brings joy.
In the midst of the pandemic, Bad Bunny released "Safera," which is basically a compilation of other songs, I think it brought enjoyment and joy to many of us during a time of complete uncertainty when our country (like many others) was at a standstill. After this grand introduction, I invite you on June 30th, starting at 7:00 PM, to a relaxed reggaeton party, mostly featuring old-school tracks (although I must say that some new songs cannot be left out). I will give some guidance on how we used to dance during my adolescence, and above all, it will be an evening of enjoying and celebrating being alive.” - María Monegro

En el marco de la exposición de María Monegro "Cómo me Convertí en Lava", y en el marco de Art Nou 2023, os invitamos a una Fiestecita suave de reggaeton viejos, el 30 de junio a las 19h.
”Es inevitable que lo que vemos, lo que escuchamos, que nuestra cultura no influya en el trabajo que hacemos como artistas, sin importar el medio que utilicemos. Al ser dominicana, al ser caribeña, el reggaetón es parte de mi cultura y ha sido una de las músicas más constantes de mi vida. Recuerdo que con 12 años ya estaba bailando al ritmo de “Latigazo” de Daddy Yankee.
Más de la mitad de mi vida he estado escuchando reggaetón, para bien o para mal, ya que algunos le gusta argumentar que por culpa del reggaetón y del dembow (música urbana) es que hay más violencia en República Dominicana. Hay más violencia porque las desigualdades sociales se hacen cada vez más agudas, porque no tenemos acceso a una educación digna o siquiera a salud sexual y reproductiva. El reggaetón para muchos exponentes del género ha sido el ticket para salir de la pobreza y del barrio, para mí el reggaetón y el dembow aparte de salvar vidas, dan alegría.
En medio de la pandemia salió “Safera” de Bad Bunny que básicamente es un compendio de otras canciones, pero en su momento creo que a muchos nos dio algo de disfrute y de alegría en un momento de completa incertidumbre, donde como muchos otros nuestro país estaba completamente parado y cerrado. Luego de esta super introducción y del gran porque les invito el 30 de Junio a partir de las 19:00 a una fiestecita tranquila de reggaetón mayormente viejo, aunque debo de decir que algunas canciones nuevas no se pueden quedar fuera, daré alguna directrices de cómo se bailaba en mi preadolescencia pero sobretodo será una tardecita de gozar y celebrar que seguimos con vida.” - María Monegro
